Anna Meets The Baby Jesus

Jesus’ Life: Chapter 2 – Jesus’ Birth And Childhood

Friendship is a great treasure. It is valued at all stages of life; when we are children, in adulthood and in our older years.

When Mary and Joseph met Anna in the Temple Courts at the Presentation of Jesus, multiple generations were present. Jesus was just over a month old, Mary and Joseph were new parents and Anna an old woman. She had been a widow for eighty-four years and was considered a Prophetess. She worshipped and fasted, never leaving the Temple day or night.

When she saw the Holy Family she loudly sang God’s praises; giving thanks for the baby Jesus and celebrating his presence.

Jesus was, “The Redemption of Jerusalem,” she proclaimed. (Lk 2:36-38)

Thought

When Mary and Joseph took their baby to Jerusalem, friendships were instantly made but Anna was different. She knew this was no ordinary baby, he was the Messiah.

It’s easy to take for granted the gift of friendship that we also have with Jesus, Mary and Joseph. They are true friends, tolerant of our failures and fears, merciful in our sorrow and pain. Talk to them, often.

Reflection
Presentation of Jesus - Anna and Simeon

Lord Jesus, remind me of your humble ways when I digress. May I forever remember to put others and their gift of friendship before my needs.

Prayer: All Needs (St Clement of Rome)

We beg you, Lord, to help and defend us.
Deliver the oppressed.
Pity the insignificant.
Raise the fallen.
Show yourself to the needy.
Heal the sick.
Bring back those of your people who have gone astray.
Feed the hungry.
Lift up the weak.
Take off the prisoner’s chains.

May every nation come to know that you alone are God.
that Jesus is your Child,
that we are your people,
the sheep that you pasture. Amen.
