Parable Of The Sower by Jesus

Jesus’ Life: Chapter 6 – Jesus’ Ministry In Galilee (Part 2)

Jesus told the parable of a man who went out to sow seed:-

He said, some of the seed fell on the path which the birds ate, some on rocky ground with little soil which sprouted but died, some among thorns which grew but the thorns choked it and some on rich soil which grew and thrived.

Sketch of man sowing seed

What does that all mean the disciples asked?

The seed, Jesus said, represents the Word of God, the Gospel;

  • The seed that fell on the path represented the people who heard the Gospel but, Satan came and took it away.
  • The seed that fell on the rocky ground represented the people who heard, gladly received, but later gave up.
  • The seed that fell among thorns represented the people who heard but were distracted by worldly values and drifted off.
  • The seed that fell on good soil represented those who heard the Word and lived its message to the full. (Matthew 13:1-9, Mark 4:1-9, Luke 8:4-8)
Thought

I hope I am the seed that fell on good soil! Every day, I ask God for His help.

Reflection

Lord Jesus, thank you for your Word.
Strengthen my resolve to understand its meaning.
Give me the grace to persist with an obedient and good heart,
and bear the fruit of your heavenly Kingdom.

Prayer: Michael The Archangel

Holy Michael the Archangel,
defend us in the day of battle.
Be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray,
and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host,
by the power of God,
thrust down to hell satan
and all the wicked spirits
who wander through the world for the ruin of souls.

Parable Of The Sower

Saint-TodaySt Robert Bellarmine
(1542 -1621)

St Robert Bellarmine was born into a noble but impoverished family at Montepulciano, Italy. He was a bright student and at 16, entered a novitiate in Rome. He then progressed to the Universities of Padua and Leuven.

Following his ordination, St Robert began a long teaching career at Leuven University. He became a well-known Jesuit professor and preacher. St Roberts works and achievements led to two Popes, Sixtus and Clement, choosing him as a respected papal theologian to help them guide the Church. He was appointed Rector of the Roman College and a Cardinal. He is a Doctor of the Church.

Reading-1Story

St-Robert-BellarmineJesus told a parable about a farmer going out to sow seed. In it he described seed falling on different parts of the field, some grew and some didn’t.

The seed that fell on the footpath was eaten by birds. This seed, Jesus explained, represented the Word of God which was heard but, others came and took it away! (Luke 8:4-15)

ThoughtsThought

Sadly, it’s likely that many of us will know friends or even family members who, no longer follow their faith; others have come and taken it away!

We can be easily overwhelmed by thoughts of sorrow and hope for them but, we must also remember that often, as they watch our own daily faith practices, they return as staunch allies.

Remember the power of prayer, it keeps the “birds away.”

ReflectionsReflection

Good Jesus, strengthen our faith. Give us the wisdom to reach out to others as they question their beliefs. May we be guiding stars to each other. This we ask through the intercession of the Angels and Saints. Amen.

Cross-WhiteA Prayer – Faith (St Benedict)

Gracious and Holy Father,
give us the wisdom to discover You,
the intelligence to understand You,
the diligence to seek after You,
the patience to wait for You,
eyes to behold You,
a heart to meditate upon You,
and a life to proclaim You,
through the power of the Spirit of Jesus, our Lord. Amen.
