The Transfiguration (6)

Extract

Transfiguration of Jesus

Jesus’ face, “was transformed and his clothes became very bright, a brilliant white… Moses and Elijah, began talking with Him. They appeared in glorious splendour and spoke about his departure that he was about to carry out at Jerusalem”. (Luke 9:28b-36)

Thought

I imagine that the Transfiguration events were a great strengthener for Jesus knowing, as He did, that his tragic passion and death was soon to be.

In the same magnificent glory, Jesus will return to judge the living and the dead.

Reflection

Holy, Holy, Holy. Lord God of hosts. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blest is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Prayer: Be At Peace (St Francis de Sales)

Do not look forward in fear to the changes in life;
rather, look to them with full hope that as they arise,
God, whose very own you are,
will lead you safely through all things;
and when you cannot stand it,
God will carry you in His arms.

Do not fear what may happen tomorrow;
the same understanding Father who cares for you today
will take care of you then and every day.

He will either shield you from suffering
or will give you unfailing strength to bear it.
Be at peace,
and put aside all anxious thoughts and imaginations.

Transfiguration of Jesus (Feast)

Image of Transfiguration of Jesus

The transfiguration of Jesus occurred when He took three of his Apostles, Peter, James and John, to a mountaintop to pray. As he prayed, his face was transformed and his clothes became a brilliant white, and the prophets Moses and Elijah appeared to Him. Then a voice from heaven, God the Father, said, “This is my Son, my Chosen One. Listen to him”.

The Transfiguration is one of the five pivotal moments in Jesus’ life; the others being his Baptism, Death, Resurrection and Ascension. It was a time when Heaven and earth were connected through Jesus, the Son of God.

The Transfiguration is generally celebrated on the 6th August.
