Thomas Aquinas

St Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) was born into a wealthy family at Roccasecca in Italy. He joined the Dominicans – much to his families displeasure and their many attempts to prevent him. He studied at The University of Naples and the University of Paris.

St Thomas taught as Professor in multiple institutions and served as Papal Theologian to Pope Clement IV.

St Thomas Aquinas was a distinguished and immensely influential theologian; “He was the foremost classical proponent of natural theology… and much of modern philosophy developed or opposed his ideas, particularly in the areas of ethics, natural law, metaphysics, and political theory”. St Thomas was canonised a Saint, just fifty years after his death. He is a greatly respected Doctor of the Church. St Thomas’ Feast Day is 28th January.

In 1880, St Thomas was declared Patron of all Catholic educational establishments.
