St Scholastica (Approx. 480 – 542) was born into a wealthy family in Nursia, Italy. Both St Scholastica and her twin brother, Benedict, entered monasteries and formed their own communities, sited about five miles apart. They regularly visited each other as brother and sister for spiritual enrichment, meeting away from their monasteries so they didn’t break any community rules.
Close to the time of St Scholastica’s death, Benedict visited her. When the time came for him to return to his monastery, she asked him to stay but he refused since it would mean breaking one of his communities rules. Immediately a storm erupted and Benedict asked his sister what was happening, she replied, “I asked you to stay with me but you would not listen, so I asked God and he listened”. Three days later, St Scholastica died.
St Scholastica’s Feast Day is 10th February. She is the Patron Saint of convulsive children and invoked at times of storms.
