Peter Chrysologus

St Peter Chrysologus (ca 380 – 450) was born in Imola, Italy. He was baptised, educated and ordained a Deacon by the Bishop of Imola.

In 443, Pope Sixtus appointed St Peter Bishop of Ravenna following a vision in which St Peter the Apostle and St Apollinaris, the first Bishop of Ravenna, appeared alongside St Peter Chrysologus.

St Peter Chrysologus was well known for his succinct but inspiring homilies as well as his “piety and zeal” which “won universal admiration”. His many writings, including a series of homilies on St John the Baptist and the Blessed Virgin Mary, were adapted and translated into many languages. He is a Doctor of the Church.

St Peter’s Feast Day is the 30th July.
