John the Evangelist (Apostle)

St John (Approx. 6-100), son of Zebedee and Salome, was one of the Twelve Apostles, as was his brother James. He was the author of several books in the New Testament including, the Gospel according to John, and is thus referred to as St John the Evangelist.

St John was a fisherman and became a disciple of John the Baptist before being chosen by Jesus as one of his Apostles.

St John sat next to Jesus at the Last Supper and was described by Jesus as the “disciple whom He loved”. He was witness to many events in Jesus’ life including, the raising from the dead of Jairus’ daughter, the transfiguration, the agony of Jesus at Gethsemane and Jesus’ Crucifixion.

St John was the only apostle to accompany the women during Jesus’ crucifixion and remain at the foot of the Cross until His death. He accepted Jesus’ final request as He hung on the cross, to take care of Mary his Mother.

St John outlived all the other Apostles, dying at around 94yrs. He is thought to be the only Apostle not to have been martyred.

St John’s Feast Day is the 27th December.
