John Duns Scotus

Bl. John Duns (Approx. 1266-1308) was born into a leading local family at Duns in Berwickshire, Scotland. He joined the Franciscans at Dumfries, was educated at Oxford and ordained a Catholic Priest, probably around the minimum age of 25yrs.

Bl. John lectured at the University of Paris and later at Cologne. He was a noted philosopher/theologian of the Middle Ages and influential within the Catholic Church. Many of his great works still exist today including, his commentary on the “Sentences” of Peter Lombard.

Bl. John died unexpectedly in Cologne and was buried in the Church of the Friars Minor. The inscription on his tomb reads, “Scotland brought me forth. England sustained me. France taught me. Cologne holds me”. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1993.

Bl. John’s Feast Day is the 8th of November, the day of his death.
