Helena of Constantinople

St Helena (246/50-327/30) was a native of Drepana, an ancient Greco-Roman town in Bithynia, Asia Minor. She was the mother of the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great (306-337) which gave her significant influence and power.

St Helena converted to Christianity and embarked on many charitable activities including, helping the poor and building many churches. She is also credited by some for having founded the Vatican Gardens.

St Helena was honoured with the title Augusta Imperatrix, giving her unlimited access to Roman treasures. She used the special status during a pilgrimage to Jerusalem and Palestine and discovered the True Cross upon which Jesus was crucified.

Exaltation of the Holy Cross, a Feast Day, is generally celebrated on the 14th September.

St Helena died in Nicomedia and was buried outside Rome in the Mausoleum of Helena. Her sarcophagus is now retained by the Pio-Clementine Vatican Museum and her skull is displayed in the Cathedral of Trier, in Germany. (Wikipedia)

St Helena’s Feast Day is the 18th August. She is the Patron Saint of new discoveries.
