Dermot, Diarmis, Diarmaid or Dermot the Just

St Dermot (Died ca 542) is also known as Dermot the Just (nickname), Diarmis or Diarmaid. He was a native of Connaught in Ireland and possibly of Royal heritage.

St Dermot was an Abbott, preacher and writer, and was the spiritual director to Saint Kiernan of Clonmacnois.

St Dermot founded the monastery of Caille-Fochladha, Lough Derryvaragh, Co Westmeath and the great monastery of Inchcleraun on the isolated island of Innis Closran in Lough Ree. Innis Closran attracted many thousands of disciples and pilgrims and survived for six centuries after his death. The ruins of six churches are still visible on the island today.

St Dermot’s Feast Day is the 10th January, the day of his death. His burial place is on Innis Closran.
