Prayer is Love, I want to Love


St Cuthbert was born into a noble family near Melrose Abbey, Northumbria, on the Scottish borders. Following a vision at the age of 17yrs, the day St Aidan (founder of Lindisfarne) died, he decided to become a Monk.

St Cuthbert was appointed Guest Master at a newly established monastery in Rippon around 655. In 662, he was appointed Prior of Melrose monastery and a few years later he transferred to Lindisfarne as it’s Prior. St Cuthbert also founded an oratory at Dull which later became a monastery and is now part of St Andrew’s University.

In 684, St Cuthbert was appointed Bishop of Lindisfarne but resigned the post a few years later preferring, a more hermit way of life. It is said that he spent most of his time “among the people, ministering to their spiritual needs, carrying out missionary journeys, preaching, and performing miracles”. St Cuthbert is remembered for his “piety, diligence, and obedience”.

St Cuthbert’s Feast Day is 20th March. He is regarded as the Patron Saint of Northern England.
