Conrad of Parzham

St Conrad (1818-1894) was born into a peasant farming family at Parzham, Germany. His youth was spent doing farm work while reciting the rosary and using every opportunity he had available to visit his church, despite the distance and weather.

St Conrad preferred quiet solitude and developed a great devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, often travelling on pilgrimage to distant shrines.

St Conrad’s mother died when he was 14 and at 31, when his father died, he disposed of all his wealth and joined the Capuchin Franciscan Friars who sent him to the Friary of St Ann in the busy city of Altotting.

St Conrad lived the remainder of his years, 41+, at the shrine in constant prayer, penance and fasting while fulfilling the arduous and busy role of Shrine Porter. He was described as “diligent at his work, sparing in words, bountiful to the poor, eager and ready to receive and help strangers”.

St Conrad’s Feast Day is 21st April, the day of his death.
