After attending Jesuit school, St Claude entered novitiate training with The Society of Jesus at Avignon. In 1676, St Claude was sent to England as minister to the Duchess of York. Two years later, while awaiting his return to France, he was arrested, imprisoned and tortured as part of the then purge against an alleged plot to overthrow the English Throne. More than 20 of his fellow Jesuits died but he, with the protection of the King of France, as a French citizen, was expelled from England. He spent his final years teaching novices and writing but, his imprisonment had severely weakened his health. He died aged 41yrs.

St Claude de la Colombiere’s Feast Day is 15th February, the day of his death. His Patronages include devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
