Prayer is Love, I want to Love

St Blaise (Died Approx. 316) was a medical doctor and probably what we might call today, a throat specialist. However, he was also a “Physician of Souls”.

When the Bishop of Sebaste, his hometown, (modern-day Turkey) died, St Blaise was the people’s popular replacement. He was a devout and holy man and is reported to have performed numerous miracles in his lifetime. News of his miraculous powers spread and people would arrive to receive his blessing, taking with them their herds of animals.

In 316, St Blaise was arrested on the instructions of the area Governor during a purge against Christians. He was beaten, scourged with iron wool combs and beheaded for refusing to renounce his Christian beliefs and practices. As he was being led to his martyrdom he saved the life of a young boy who was choking to death, caused by a fish bone in his throat.

St Blaise’s Feast Day is 3rd February. His Patronage includes animals, builders, drapers, choking, veterinarians, throats, infants, stonecutters, carvers and wool workers. He remains a very popular saint and throat blessings are common practice particularly on his Feast Day.
