The Question About David’s Son

Jesus’ Life: Chapter 13 – Jesus’ Final Ministry In Jerusalem

In the New Testament, it is common to find frequent references to the Pharisees and others questioning Jesus with the explicit intention of ensnaring him, trapping him. In addition, there are also occasions when Jesus challenged their understanding of Old Testament teachings and used it to show them he was the Messiah, the Christ.

Sketch implying questioning of thoughts

After one such occasion, when a group of Pharisees who had rejected Jesus as Lord and the Messiah were gathered together, Jesus asked them, “Whose Son is the Christ?” They immediately replied, “David”.

How then, Jesus asked, could David call him by the Spirit ‘Lord’ when he said, “The Lord said to my Lord, ‘Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet”’ (Psalm 110:1). “If David”, Jesus said, “Calls him ‘Lord,’ how can he be his son?”

The Pharisees were unable to answer and “from that day on no one dared to question him any longer”.

Jesus had descended from David. He was the Son of God; our Lord and Messiah. (Matthew 22:41-46, Mark 12:35-37a, Luke 20:41-44)

Thought

Jesus hoped the Pharisees would adjust to His new scripture and accept him as their Messiah; it wasn’t to be. We continue to pray for those among us today who still don’t accept Jesus as the Son of God and Messiah.

Reflection

Lord God, enlighten my ways and grant me the strength to profess your teachings to others. This I ask through your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, our Messiah.

Prayer: Light (Gospel Extracts)

The light of God surrounds me,
the love of God enfolds me,
the power of God protects me,
the presence of God watches over me,
wherever I am, God is,
and where God is, all is perfect.
