The Impromptu Friend At Midnight

Jesus’ Life: Chapter 10 – Jesus’ Last Journey To Jerusalem

Have you ever heard the saying, “A true friend is a rare and precious gift. They never let you down, they are always there to help”? These or similar words are embedded in many poems and songs, bringing joy to numerous listeners.

Quote: Friendship

Jesus told a parable about friendship versus persistence.

He said, a man went to a neighbour friend at midnight seeking three loaves of bread; another friend had stopped off at his home but he had no food to offer. However, the neighbour friend refused, saying, “Do not bother me. The door is already shut, and my children and I are in bed. I cannot get up”.

“I tell you”, Jesus added, “Even though the [neighbour friend] will not get up and give him anything… because of the man’s sheer persistence, not because he is a friend, he will get up and give him whatever he needs”.

Jesus was saying to his listeners, your persistence will be rewarded. So, be persistent in your prayers to God. (Luke 11:5-8)

Thought

Yes, a true friend may seem hard to find. Perhaps, out of the three characters in this parable, the most reliable friend was the man who went looking for the loaves of bread!

However, don’t overlook the true and everlasting friendship you have with God.

Reflection

Lord Jesus, thank you for being my true friend; always there to help. Amen

Prayer: Joy (St Mother Teresa)

I smile, and the world smiles with me.
I laugh, and the world laughs too.
I praise you, dear God, and the world breaks out in song.
For you are the source of my joy,
the wellspring of my love,
the key to my compassion.
Be with me today, tomorrow, and forever,
so that I may bring your joy to all I meet.
