Sorrow Turned To Joy

Jesus’ Life: Chapter 17 – Jesus’ Last Supper Messages

At the Last Supper Jesus said to his disciples, “In a little while you will not see me; again after a little while, you will see me…‘because I am going to the Father’?”. But they didn’t understand and asked each other what it all meant.

Questioning

Jesus, knowing what they were thinking, replied, “I tell you the solemn truth, you will weep and wail [at my death], but the world will rejoice; you will be sad, but your sadness will turn into joy [at my resurrection]. When a woman gives birth, she has distress because her time has come, but when her child is born, she no longer remembers the suffering because of her joy that a human being has been born into the world”.

Jesus was referring to the interval between the last Supper and his resurrection; “In a little while,” Jesus would be crucified and buried and, “You will not see me”. “After a little while [three days], “You will see me”, the Risen Lord and your sadness will turn to great joy, “And no one will take your joy away from you”(John 16:16-22)

Thought

The Apostles seemed confused at Jesus’ message, He was leaving them but soon they would be filled with joy on meeting Him again, as the Risen Jesus.

Reflection

Almighty God, help me to understand Jesus’ Word and his promises more clearly. Grant me the wisdom of your Holy Spirit. Amen.

Prayer: I Arise Today

I arise today with a great strength:

God’s power to guide me,
God’s might to uphold me,
God’s eyes to watch over me,
God’s ear to hear me,
God’s word to give me speech,
God’s hand to guard me,
God’s way to lie before me,
God’s shield to shelter me and
God’s host to secure me.
