Prediction Of The Disciples’ Flight

Jesus’ Life: Chapter 17 – Jesus’ Last Supper Messages

Jesus did not doubt the Apostles faith but he lovingly foretold them that they would soon desert him, saying, “Look, a time is coming – and has come – when you will be scattered, each one to his own home, and I will be left alone. Yet I am not alone because my Father is with me”.

Alone!

Jesus was challenging the strength and conviction of the Apostles faith at the last Supper. Although they had just told him, “We believe that you have come from God,” his response was one of suggested reexamination; they may have thought their faith was unshakable but it wouldn’t endure even their immediate trials!

Jesus’ hour was near. In a short while, the Apostles would fall asleep as he suffered in the Garden of Gethsemane and scatter when the soldiers would try to arrest Him; only Simon Peter and John would follow, at a distance, to Caiaphas’ house.

However, Jesus still knew he would not be alone, his Father in heaven would not forsake him. Jesus said to the Apostles, “I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace”. (John 16:29-33)

Thought

When feeling lonely, trust in Jesus; he is always listening.

Reflection

Lord Jesus, grant me the strength to fight all remnants of doubt in my heart and the courage to walk with you through all my trials and conflicts.

Prayer: Humility

Most humble Jesus,
give me a share of your humility.
Take from my heart, everything that displeases you;
convert it totally to you,
so that I may no longer will or desire
anything other than what you will.
