Jesus’ Life: Chapter 6 – Jesus’ Ministry In Galilee (Part 2)
It was evening time when Jesus got into a boat with his disciples to cross to the other side of the lake. Possibly exhausted from his day of preaching and teaching, Jesus went to sleep.
However, a great storm erupted. The wind blew fiercely and waves lashed against the side of the boat. The disciples were terrified and woke Jesus saying, “Teacher, don’t you care that we are about to perish”.
Jesus got up and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Quiet, be still”. The storm immediately stopped. He then turned to his disciples and asked, “Why are you terrified? Do you not yet have faith?” (Matthew 8:23-27, Mark 4:35-41, Luke 8:22-25)
Thought
The disciples were overwhelmed firstly, by the terrifying storm and then, by Jesus’ almighty power.
Perhaps, Jesus was just testing the disciples’ faith as he slept!
Without faith, fear overwhelms; with prayer, faith strengthens.
Reflection
Lord Jesus, give me the wisdom to understand your almighty power and the strength to put my faith entirely in your hands.
Prayer: Solace
May Christ support us all the day long,
till the shadows lengthen,
and the evening comes,
and the busy world is hushed,
and the fever of life is over
and our work is done.
Then in his mercy
may he give us a safe lodging,
and holy rest
and peace at the last. Amen.
