Jesus Is Lost In Jerusalem

Jesus’ Life: Chapter 2 – Jesus’ Birth And Childhood

When Jesus was 12 years old, he went with his parents from his home in Nazareth to Jerusalem. The long and tiresome journey was around 120 kilometres and took at least a couple of days to complete. It was a well-trodden annual outing; the local community would travel together to Jerusalem, family, friends and neighbours. They did so to celebrate the Jewish Passover.

We can assume that this eight-day Passover Celebration was the usual spiritually uplifting occasion for the Holy Family but with one exception.

On their return home and having travelled for a whole day, Joseph and Mary suddenly realised that their Son, Jesus, was missing. They had each assumed He was safely in the company of other family members or friends such was the closeness of the large group of travellers.

Shocked, the frantic parents returned to Jerusalem and searched. Finally, after three days, they found Jesus in the Temple surrounded by an astonished crowd; He was the centre of everyone’s attention; his knowledge of the Old Testament and his answers to their numerous questions were astounding.

Mary asked Jesus, “Son, why have you done this to us?” Jesus replied, “Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?” (Lk 2:41-52)

Thought

So many thoughts:

  • How to be a good parent.
  • How, at 12yrs old, Jesus was so knowledgeable in Old Testament teachings and inspirational to even the Jewish leaders.
  • How Mary and Joseph kept, “All these things in their heart,” with their many unanswered questions.

A Mother and Father’s love for their child never dies, family bonds prevail forever. But Jesus, Mary and Joseph were no ordinary family.

Reflection

Lord Jesus, protect my family and friends. May we be one with you in all our travels and forever retain the great gifts of Your holy mercy and love.
