When Jesus heard the disciples arguing about who among them was the greatest, he stood a child by his side and said, “Whoever receives this child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me. For the one who is least among all of you is the one who is the greatest”. (Luke 9:46-47)
Thought
The striking image of one small helpless child standing beside Jesus but surrounded by a circle of big squabbling adults, must have impacted heavily on the disciple’s ego!
How big or small is my ego? Am I humble and filled with kindness?
Reflection
Lord Jesus, keep me close to my roots. Instil in me the desire to retain my childhood love for everyone and everything. Teach me your caring ways.
Prayer: All Needs
We beg you, Lord,
to help and defend us.
Deliver the oppressed.
Pity the insignificant.
Raise the fallen.
Show yourself to the needy.
Heal the sick.
Bring back those of your people who have gone astray.
Feed the hungry.
Lift up the weak.
Take off the prisoner’s chains.
May every nation come to know that you alone are God,
that Jesus is your child,
that we are your people,
the sheep that you pasture. Amen.
