Extract
When a young man asked Jesus what he must do to inherit eternal life, Jesus told him to keep The Commandments.
The young man replied, “I have wholeheartedly obeyed all these laws, what do I still lack?” Jesus said, “Go sell your possessions and give the money to the poor and… follow me”. (Matthew 19:20-21)
The young man was extremely downhearted, for he was very wealthy!
Thought
The world has changed a great deal since Jesus’ time two thousand years ago but “great wealth” still exists, albeit in many new forms from luxury goods and multiple homes to copious supplies of food. So, if Jesus was asked the same question today, would his answer be any different?
“Nope,” wealth is wealth!
Reflection
Lord Jesus, help me to keep your commandments and to never forget the poor – my own brothers and sisters, Christians and non-Christians.
Prayer: Poor – Daily Service
Make us worthy, Lord,
to serve our brothers and sisters throughout the world,
who live and die in poverty and hunger.
Give them, through our hands,
this day their daily bread,
and by our understanding love,
give them peace and joy.
Make us, Lord,
worthy to serve our brothers and sisters,
scattered all over the world,
who live and die alone and poor.
Give them today, using our hands, their daily bread.
And, using our love, give them peace and happiness. Amen.
