When the other ten Apostles heard that James and John (or their mother) had asked Jesus if they could sit, one at his right and the other at his left in Heaven, they were very angry.
Jesus called them together and said, “Whoever wants to be great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must be the slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many”. (Mark 10:44-45)
Jesus loves us very much but, in times of difficulty, He will only grant what is good for us!
Like James and John, we will have to labour and earn our reward of salvation.
Lord Jesus, keep me firmly focused on You today. Grant me the gift of perseverance as I meet the challenges that come my way and help me to be a faithful witness to your Gospel in my thoughts, words and actions.
Prayer: Breastplate (St Patrick)
I bind unto myself today,
the power of God to hold and lead,
his eye to watch, his might to stay,
his ear to hearken to my need:
the wisdom of my God to teach,
his hand to guide, his shield to ward;
the word of God to give me speech,
his heavenly host to be my guard.
Christ be with me, Christ within me,
Christ behind me, Christ before me,
Christ beside me, Christ to win me,
Christ to comfort me and restore me,
Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ in quiet, Christ in danger,
Christ in hearts of all that love me,
Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.
