Extract
Jesus was well aware of his imminent death and following his triumphal entry into Jerusalem, He said to Philip and Andrew, “I tell you the solemn truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains by itself alone. But if it dies, it produces much grain”. (John 12:24)
Thought
What did Jesus mean by this metaphor?
A farmer knows that if a seed is not planted it doesn’t grow. Yet, when he plants it, the seed itself “dies” but it grows into a new plant producing multiple new seeds.
Jesus knew that by his death, He would atone for our sins and the joy of eternal happiness would become possible for you and me. Like the seed, Jesus sacrificed his life to, “bring many sons to glory”. (Hebrews 2:10)
Reflection
Lord Jesus, I thank you for your crucifixion, your forgiveness of my sins, your everlasting love and, I pray, my salvation. Amen.
Prayer: Psalm 130
Out of the depths, I cry to you, O Lord,
Lord, hear my voice.
O let your ears be attentive to the voice of my pleading.
If you, O Lord, should mark our guilt,
Lord, who would survive?
But with you is found forgiveness;
for this we revere you.
My soul is waiting for the Lord,
I count on his word.
My soul is longing for the Lord,
I count on his word.
My soul is longing for the lord,
more than watchmen for daybreak.
Because with the Lord there is mercy
and fullness of redemption,
Israel indeed he will redeem from all its iniquity.
