Jesus Grants The Apostles The Power To Forgive Sins

Extract

Confession Booth

After Jesus’ death and resurrection, he appeared to his disciples on multiple occasions. On one, most of them were together, afraid and hiding. He greeted them saying, “Peace be with you” and after showing them his pierced side and hands, He breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone’s sins, they are forgiven; if you retain anyone’s sins, they are retained”. (John 20:19,22-23)

Thought

At that very special moment, a merciful Jesus gave his Apostles the power to forgive sins; the sacrament of reconciliation (Confessions) was thus institutionalised for us to seek forgiveness and reconcile with God.

Do I use it as often as I should? God waits!

Reflection

Merciful Jesus, thank you for your love; thank you for restoring my inward grace and thank you for returning ‘peace to my soul’.

Prayer: To The Holy Spirit

Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful,
and kindle in them the fire of Your Divine Love.
Send forth Your Spirit and they shall be created,
and You shall renew the face of the earth.

Oh God, Who by the light of the Holy Spirit
instructed the hearts of the faithful.
Grant, that by the same Spirit we may be truly wise and
ever rejoice in His consolation.
We ask this through Christ Our Lord. Amen.
