Jesus was dining at the house of a Pharisee on the Sabbath when he saw a man suffering from dropsy (accumulation of fluid). Jesus cured the man even though He knew some observers were trying to catch him out by claiming he “worked” on the Sabbath!
When Jesus turned and asked them, “Which of you, if you have a son or an ox that has fallen into a well on a Sabbath day, will not immediately pull him out?” no one answered; an admission that He hadn’t broken their laws! (Luke 14:1-6)
When we are doing good, with or without reward, it’s difficult to argue that we should not be allowed to do it every day of the week!
Lord Jesus, through your Resurrection, you made Sunday special. Help me to also make it a special day, a day to serve you and share your Good News throughout my world.
Prayer: Priests and Religious (Cardinal Joseph Bernadin)
Lord of the harvest,
your Word finds a home in our heart,
calls us into community,
and invites us to generous service of the human family.
Bless with courage and spirit your priestly people,
called to full participation in the one Body of Christ.
May many choose to respond in public service
to your call offered in Jesus’ name. Amen.
