During the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus said to his disciples, “Do not give what is holy to dogs or throw your pearls before pigs; otherwise they will trample them under their feet and turn around and tear you to pieces”. (Matthew 7:6)
Why would Jesus use such strong language? Who or what was He referring to?
Jesus was using symbolism to tell His disciples to preach his Gospel to all but to those who simply wished to blaspheme and ridicule his teachings, “move on”.
Just as pigs don’t differentiate between food and expensive pearls, there are those who will not accept the sacrifice Jesus made for humankind.
ReflectioN (Based on Fatima Prayer of Sacrifice)
O Jesus, it is for the love of You, for the conversion of sinners, and in the reparation for the sins committed against You that I offer to you my prayers, works and sufferings of this day. Amen.
Prayer: Christian Unity (John Henry Newman)
O Lord Jesus Christ, when you were about to suffer, you prayed for your disciples that they might all be one, as you are in the Father and the Father in you.
Look down in pity on the many divisions among those who profess your faith. Heal the wounds which the pride of man and the craft of satan have inflicted on your people. Break down the walls of separation which divide Christians. Look with compassion on all souls and bring them together under the Holy Catholic Church.
