14th January: St Sava

Featured Saint: Saint Sava (1174-1235)

St Sava was the youngest son of a Serbian Grand Prince. He became a Monk and founded many Monasteries and Churches including, those on Mount Athos and Zica. He was the first Archbishop of the Serbs and remains one of their most important figureheads.

When St Sava moved to Greece, his father begged him to return home. His son’s response was “You have accomplished what a Christian sovereign should do; come now and join me in the true Christian life”. His father did join him, becoming a Monk, and together they continued their great work. His father was also canonised a Saint, St Simeon.

+In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of The Holy Spirit. Amen+

St SavaShort StoryJesus performed numerous miracles, partly to help strengthen our faith. Once he visited the home of Simon whose mother-in-law was sick with a fever. Jesus, “raised her up by gently taking her hand and the fever left her“. (Mark 1:31)

Thoughts: Through prayer and good works, our faith will remain solid, like that of the Apostles.

Private Reflection: Lord Jesus, you have sown the word of eternal life in our hearts that we may be faithful in your service. Grant that our hearts remain forever close to you, our God.

PrayerFaith Prayer by St Benedict
Gracious and Holy Father,
give us the wisdom to discover You,
the intelligence to understand You,
the diligence to seek after You,
the patience to wait for You,
eyes to behold You,
a heart to meditate upon You,
and a life to proclaim You,
through the power of the Spirit of Jesus, our Lord. Amen.
