Time: Good Friday: – After 9.00am
Severely weakened and in agony from His scourging, Jesus was ladened with a wooden Roman Cross and sent on his way to Golgotha (Aramaic) which meant “Place of the Skull”.
Although it was routine practice for all condemned criminals to carry their own crosses, the soldiers forced a passer-by, Simon of Cyrene (Libya) – the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry Jesus’ cross behind Him for at least part of His lonely journey; the soldiers were concerned that Jesus would die on-route thus depriving them of their intended goal, seeing Jesus crucified and suffering further excruciating pain, nailed and hanging until death.
A large group of people followed the condemned Jesus to Golgotha (Calvary), led by his executioners. They included a group of women as well as Mary his Mother, Mary Magdalene and the Apostle John, ‘the disciple whom Jesus loved’. Jesus turned to the “mourning and wailing” women and said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me but weep for yourselves and for your children”. (Luke 23:28)
Jesus walked willingly, accepting his sentence, to die for their sons and daughters, you and I. He was the Lamb of God, being led to the slaughter for our many sins. (Matthew 27:31b-32, Mark 15:20b-21, Luke 23:26-31, John 19:17)
Do I ever weep over my sins?
Maybe I think everything will be OK!
Lord Jesus, upon my knees, I humbly seek your mercy and forgiveness; I have sinned against you and your creation.
Prayer: Before A Crucifix
Behold, O Kind and Most Sweet Jesus,
I fall upon my knees in Thy sight,
and with the most fervent desire of my soul,
I pray and beseech Thee
to impress upon my heart
lively sentiments of faith, hope and charity,
with true repentance for my sins,
and a firm desire of amendment.
Whilst with deep affection and grief of soul,
I ponder within myself and mentally contemplate
Thy five most precious wounds,
having before my eyes that which David the prophet spoke,
O Good Jesus: “They have pierced my hands and feet,
they have numbered all my bones.” Amen.
Hymn: Create In Me (Psalm 51)
