Prayer 25th Dec – Christmas Day

Featured: Christmas Day

Today is the annual celebration of Christmas for billions of Christians and non-Christians around the world. It was on this day, more than 2000yrs ago, that Jesus Christ was born in a stable to the Blessed Virgin Mary and St Joseph. They had travelled from Nazareth to Bethlehem to register for taxes as instructed by the Governor. On arrival, they were unable to find a place to stay for the night, so were forced to use a stable for shelter, among the farm animals. It was there that Mary gave birth to Jesus in the stable. Mary took the baby Jesus, “wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in the manger”.

+In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen+

Short Story: On the night that Jesus was born there were some shepherds nearby guarding their sheep. An angel of the Lord appeared to them saying, “Do not be afraid! Listen carefully, for I proclaim to you good news that brings great joy to all the people. Today your Saviour is born”. (Luke 2.10-11)

Thoughts: A very humble beginning for the baby Jesus; born in a stable without the protection that a home offers! But he had the caring support of Mary and Joseph;, his dedicated parents.

Private Reflection: Christmas by Gerard Manley Hopkins
Moonless, darkness stands between,
Past, the past no more be seen!
But the Bethlehem star may lead me
from the self that I have been.

Make me pure, Lord: Thou art Holy;
Make me meek, Lord, Thou wert lowly;
Now beginning and always:
Now begin, on Christmas Day.
